Issues surrounding adolescence are never far from a secondary or middle years teacher's mind. Curriculum, organisational structures, day to day engagement and communications with young people are based on some understanding of the life and times of the adolescent. This was an important conference ... it was an opportunity for a fresh look at the myriad of things that impact on the adolescent in our classrooms and communities, and then to ask the question, so what? What does this mean for teachers, collaboratively and independently? How can the extensive literature help teachers and communities to focus their energies most effectively for the benefit of our young people? This conference considered a wide range of key areas, from normal development issues right through to gangs, addictive behaviour and students "at risk". The papers offer practical advice drawn from experiences at over 100 Queensland schools. They demonstrate that issues of adolescence have an impact on school life beyond simply the comprehension of concepts in specific curriculum areas. They consider the role of the teacher in the lives of adolescents and the community.
