Gloria B Yates is an acknowledged world-class worrier. Her Jewish forebears have given her an initial advantage, but she has, by her own efforts, hugely enhanced her heritage.
She worried assiduously through a delightful childhood in a working-class suburb of Leeds, through her scholarship years at Oxford University, a triumphant teaching career in England, Israel and Australia, and through a marriage that was everything a passionate worrier could wish.
But it was during her late emergence as a writer that her true stature as a worrier shone out. Had she left herself enough time to become famous? Haunting doubt threw her into a veritable cauldron of anxiety. No matter how many prizes she won, how many editors clamoured for her work, she worried. A slim volume of her poems was printed in NZ, her autobiography in England. What was the use? She was named LEEDS WOMAN OF THE YEAR. So what?
But as she amply demonstrates in this collection of short stories, she is still going at a fair gallop.
