At their best, haibun combine the expansiveness of fiction with the precision of haiku. Jeff Harpeng is a master of exactly that. This collection is a rollercoaster ride, swooping and soaring and confronting you abruptly with a ground that you had forgotten was there. From the world of the deaf to the world of memory, from elegy to celebration in a single sentence. This is generous, expansive poetry without pretension – a ride anyone can get on. It welcomes you in, tucks you up safely, and scares the bejesus out of you. It is addictive. And fine poetry indeed.

The motorway to Surfers Paradise, under night lighting a drag strip, designed for Playstation or X Box. There are no passengers in these games. The passengers are velocity. The game control shudders if you slew off the digital shoulder. This road has no shoulder. This road is flatline, a lane change. There is no past. The future is coming at you.
