Janice M Bostok's tanka are candid and engaging. In them, she faces life squarely, with courage and wryness - but always gently. Her occasional vulnerability is beguiling.
To read any of the tanka in this book is to go on a little journey. Each poem seems longer than it actually is because it allows the reader to share and extend the experience.
The whimsical sumi-e which illustrate a number of the poems, offer insights into Janice's creative energy and original mind.
The author's long and thoughtful engagement with the tanka form produces poetry which pays respect to tradition in a contemporary voice.
This significant collection advances the way we read and write tanka in the English language.

from the window
the fluttering of a leaf
in evening twilight
when resolved becomes
the hovering of a pigeonsince your death
the jacaranda in bloom
isn't as spectacular
or is it more truthfully
that I no longer look
